24hr Recall Interview
WISP enables you to interview a subject, going through each eating occasion in a 24 hour period. This expert system asks questions about each food and drink consumed, as appropriate, ensuring that essential details are not forgotten. You don't need to worry about food codes and portion weights as WISP converts responses automatically.

Nutrient intakes can be compared with Dietary Reference Values and the contributions of foods to nutrient intakes examined. You can provide immediate feedback to subjects on their intake. Results can be output to screen, printer, file, web page or email. You can also combine a number of 24hr recalls for a single subject, building up an intake record of several days, if you wish.

Questions asked are dependent upon the responses to previous questions. For example, if the subject states that he/she had tea or coffee, the recall interview then asks what type of milk and how much sugar was added (if any). If the subject ate a sandwich, the program asks about the type of bread, the number of slices, the type of fat spread used and details about the filling. If the subject states that he/she ate meat, the program asks about the type of meat, the dish consumed and whether he/she ate the fat on the meat. If the subject ate fish, the interview asks about the type of fish, how it was cooked and, if fried, the type of fat added. The program asks whether salt is added to vegetables during cooking. If the subject ate baked potato, the recall interview asks whether the skin was eaten and what type of fat (if any) was added. Where appropriate, the program asks whether a food/drink was reduced sugar, low calorie, reduced fat, etc. As these examples demonstrate, a lot of detail is asked about each item consumed. This enables accurate processing of responses and ensures consistency both within an interviewer and between interviewers.

A 24hr recall interview can, of course, be completed on paper and then entered into WISP in the same way as a single day food intake record. However, the interview feature in WISP has several important advantages:

  • Saves time - interview + nutritional analysis takes only 5-10 minutes
  • Ensures important details about the food/drink are not omitted
  • Reduces variation both within an interviewer and between interviewers
  • Enables immediate feedback to subjects on their nutrient intakes

If you wish to customise the 24hr recall interview, e.g. for different population groups, this can be done with FOOD24 Developer. You can develop 24hr recall interviews, import the new interviews ito WISP, then carry out the customised interviews within WISP. Click here for information on FOOD24 Developer.
